Dear Professor Protter:

	Enclosed is my review of ``The Emperor's New Mind'' by
Roger Penrose.  Because the main content of the book is
controversy rather than mathematical exposition, I wasn't able to
adhere very well to the advice for reviewers, although I tried
to keep it in mind.

	If the review is too long I can shorten it, and if you
require a different style of references, I can readily change
it.  I noticed that the {\it Bulletin} had more than one style
of references in the reviews, so I hope my preferred style is
also tolerable.  Also it would require only small modifications
to put it in AMS\TEX.
